Predictions for the 2023-24 school year: What is changing and how it may affect admissions

College campus

In doing daily research, I came across a pretty accurate assessment of how the 2023-24 application cycle could look. Below are some of the summations I would like to share:

  • Most schools will continue to remain and move into test optional with some in the South and Midwest maintaining or returning to test required. Additionally, a small number will continue to be or become test blind.
  • Expect to see diversity trends reverse at schools because of the Supreme Court decision to strike down the use of race in admissions.
  • Average test scores of admitted applicants will continue to rise.
  • Most schools will continue to accept more applicants than they reject. However, the top tier will continue to see declining admission rates, increased selectivity, and greater competitiveness to be admitted.
  • The SEC schools will continue to increase in applicants due to their sports appearances.
  • The cost of attendance will continue to rise causing some smaller schools and community colleges to close their doors completely.
  • Computer Science, engineering, business and psych-related majors and core science/pre-med favored majors will be the hardest majors to gain admission. Along with continued competitiveness in limited access to professional training majors such as direct admit nursing, PT, BFA performing arts programs, BS/MD-DM/DO.
